The Digital Switch Input Transducer has been designed to provide an isolated 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA output depending upon the digital inputs to the device and the operating mode selected. Originally designed as a transformer tap position transducer, any digital switch inputs can be used. The DSIT can have up to 40 discrete digital inputs typically from the position switches. The current output is determined by the ratio of the active input number divided by the total number of inputs as a proportion of selected current output span ( 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA). All the selections and settings are done either using the RS232 interface and setup program running on a PC or notebook computer or by using three banks of DIP switches. The DIP switches are accessible beneath the right hand side cover of the DSIT. The problem of output signal loss during switch input changing operations is overcome by the internal microprocessor which is configured to hold the last output until the input becomes valid again. The response of the output to the next valid input is instantaneous. Two programmable alarms are provided which can be set at any digital input. The alarms can be either active above or below the selected alarm level. Discrete, binary coded decimal (BCD) or binary inputs can be used. The digital inputs are galvanically isolated from the output by means of internal opto-couplers. Applications of the DSIT include using it as a transformer tap position transducer, a switch position to analog output converter or a digital to analogue converter.
